Dr Sophie Meakin
Specialist Counselling Psychologist
Biography
I have always had a strong passion for supporting people with eating disorders, and have seen first-hand the impact that they can have on a person and their loved ones. I have recently finished my training on the Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology at London Metropolitan University. During my time on the course, I have worked in a drug and alcohol charity, IAPT services, and private practice. My placements have allowed me to gain a wide range of experience in working with a variety of mental health difficulties, including but not limited to, depression, anxiety, bereavement, addiction, and low self-esteem.
Prior to my training, I worked as an assistant psychologist at an in-patient unit for eating disorders, as well as a rehabilitation unit for females with complex mental health needs and co-morbid presentations. Prior to this, I worked at a mental health hospital which consisted of acute and psychiatric intensive care, child and adolescent mental health, and private acute and addictions treatment programmes. Throughout my time at university, I have volunteered with Shout UK, which is a crisis text line. Additionally, I have volunteered with Headway (the brain injury association), and my local NHS mental health services.
I like to work in an integrative way by drawing on many different tools, techniques and therapeutic models to ensure that the client is receiving treatment that is tailored to them and their needs. I strongly believe in exploring all aspects of a person rather than focusing purely on their diagnosis. I am passionate about building a strong, collaborative therapeutic alliance where the client can feel listened to, validated and supported in their journey.
Outside of work and study, I enjoy spending my time catching up on films and series, reading, and playing badminton. I also love visiting my family back home in Birmingham, and going on one too many walks with my dog whilst there.
