BULIMIA EXPLAINED
What Is Bulimia Nervosa?
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterised by cycles of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours such as self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise, excessive laxative use or fasting. These behaviours are used in an attempt to prevent weight gain and are typically accompanied by intense feelings of guilt, shame, and loss of control.

The Importance of Understanding
Bulimia is not a choice or a lack of willpower. It is a complex mental health condition that requires specialist, compassionate support and with the right treatment, meaningful and sustained recovery is possible.

Therapies Used to Treat
Bulimia Nervosa
We offer a range of evidence-based therapies tailored to the needs of individuals experiencing bulimia nervosa. These approaches support clients to understand the patterns, thoughts, and emotions that maintain the binge–purge cycle. Therapies include:
CBT-E (Enhanced Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
CBT-E is one of the principal evidence-based psychological treatments for bulimia nervosa. It helps identify the thoughts, emotions and behaviours that maintain bingeing and compensatory behaviours. Practical bulimia therapy techniques may include establishing more regular eating, self-monitoring, recognising triggers, cognitive restructuring, challenging unhelpful beliefs about weight and shape, and developing alternative ways of responding when urges to binge or purge arise.
Family Therapy for Bulimia Nervosa (FT-BN)
For children and young people, family therapy can play an important role in recovery. Treatment supports parents or carers to help establish safer, more regular eating and reduce bingeing and compensatory behaviours, before gradually supporting the young person to regain greater independence around food. Family relationships and communication can also be explored where this is helpful.
Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)
Bulimia can be accompanied by significant shame, self-criticism and feelings of inadequacy. Compassion-Focused Therapy can help people develop a less critical relationship with themselves and learn to respond differently to difficult emotions, setbacks and body image concerns.
Schema Therapy
Schema Therapy may be useful where longstanding patterns of thinking, relating to others or coping with emotions contribute to the eating disorder. Therapy explores these deeper patterns and helps develop healthier ways of understanding and responding to emotional needs and relationships.
DBT-informed therapy
For some people, bingeing and purging can become a way of managing overwhelming emotions. DBT-informed work can introduce practical skills in areas such as emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and interpersonal effectiveness, helping people find alternative ways to respond to difficult feelings.
Other therapeutic approaches
Some people may also benefit from approaches such as MANTRA, EMDR, Cognitive Analytic Therapy or an integrative psychological therapy, particularly where trauma, anxiety, depression or other psychological difficulties are contributing to the eating disorder. Treatment should always be selected according to the individual’s presentation and needs rather than diagnosis alone.
Bulimia treatment may also involve multidisciplinary support. Alongside psychological therapy, our clinicians may recommend specialist dietetic input to support regular and adequate nutrition, family or carer involvement where appropriate, and psychiatric assessment or treatment when there are additional mental health or medication needs.
A Holistic Approach
to Recovery
Treatment at The London Centre supports both emotional healing and physical health. Our approach helps individuals build a more compassionate, balanced relationship with food and their body, while strengthening resilience and confidence.
